Literally translating to “that which hangs at the back”, Pichwai paintings usually serve as the backdrops for religious shrines of Shrinathji (the youthful manifestation of Lord Krishna). Originating 400 years ago at Nathdwara, Rajasthan, and parts of Gujarat, these theatrical, multi-layered depictions of Lord Krishna’s lore are painted on cotton or brocade or heavy silk, with intricate and precise forms adorned with gems, crystals and even gold threads at times - adding aesthetic, religious and cultural value to this art practice. The themes centre around Lord Krishna’s lores, festivals such as Janmashtami, Sharada Purnima,Gopashtami . Pichwai paintings are often changed daily or seasonally as per the occasion in the religious shrine it characteristically sits in.
